First Hill Streetcar

The First Hill Streetcar links King Street Station to International District Station to the Capital Hill light rail station. The focus, however, is the Chinatown – International District. Tmarks was honored to develop the exterior and interior graphics. But perhaps the real work was finding a common solution that was true to three distinct cultural partners, Japantown, Chinatown and Little Saigon.

Moving beyond played-out cultural icons that might seem tired or even offensive, the districts were untied by highlighting the flower most representative of each of the cultures as well as a dragon that acts as a common bond. The result was so well received that representatives of the Chinatown-ID requested a special ceremony of dedication.  This marked the first time a streetcar was commemorted. The event was attended by citizens, local leaders including the Mayor and heralded by dragon dancers and the Chinese Drill Team.
